Activision announced today the sales of the Call of Duty series downloadable map packs, and as of June 30, 2010, the map packs have accounted for over 20 million units sold.

Steam is an amazing idea, and shows that the concept of the digital download can work and work well. According to Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson, pre-orders for Treyarch’s upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops are outpacing those of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Originally Wilson speculated that Black Ops would sell 10 million copies, but now he’s bumped his estimation up to 12 million, an increase of two million copies. I’m pretty good at math.

Activision has confirmed that it’s releasing the first DLC map pack for Modern Warfare 2 dubbed the “Stimulus Package” in just a few weeks on March 30. The Stimulus Package will first be released on Xbox Live and Silver Live members will be able to try out MW2 online play in a “Multiplayer Unlock event” during the dates of March 12-15.
